DR. JAN KRUPP
A Bay Area internist with a medical degree from Stanford, Dr. Jan Krupp was hungry for the joy he once felt working his mother’s New England gardens and his uncle’s Virginia farm.
Over the years, an amateur interest in finely-crafted wines had blossomed into full-blown Oenophilia, with weekdays in the doctor’s office followed by weekends in the cellar making home wines with friends.
Shortly after moving to Napa in 1991 and planting a 41-acre home vineyard, a large swath of land come up for sale just a few miles away. He enlisted his brother Bart, and the two doggedly set about to transform this wild expanse into what is now Stagecoach Vineyard. Dr. Jan Krupp’s passion is evident in the carefully tended vines and hand-crafted wines. On any given day, you’ll find Dr. Krupp supervising the care of the 650-acre vineyard or with the winemaker nurturing the maturing wines.
Rising over the fog line of Napa Valley’s eastern mountains, Stagecoach Vineyard boasts the thin, rocky volcanic soils ideal for growing world-class wine grapes. Stretching over 1,300 contiguous acres, with 650 acres planted, the undulating, varied terrain creates diverse Meso-climates and soil conditions that are distinctively suited to the 17 different varieties grown – from Cabernet Sauvignon to Tempranillo and Marsanne.
But when Bart and Jan Krupp were considering a rugged expanse of terrain high Napa’s eastern hills the odds were stacked against them. They faced desert mountain landscape riddled with rock and boulders, no power, no road to access the land and no known water.
Warned that water was scarce on the property, Jan and Bart turned to a geologist, and eventually, to a water witch, who pointed his divining rod to a patch and instructed them to drill – directly into a stream flowing 400 feet underground. Today, that aquifer provides water to more than half a million grapevines.
Next, the brothers set about building access to their new property. After many months of red tape and 135 legal documents, they constructed a gravel road. Once in place, they began to dynamite, clearing one million tons of rock yet leaving large swaths of land untouched so the native ecosystem would continue to thrive.
Today, Stagecoach produces fruit for some of Napa’s most iconic wineries. Dr. Krupp carefully selects and meticulously tends a small percentage of the fruit for the Krupp Brothers wines.
