This Wednesday Night Wine tasting features several smaller production producers, JC Cellars, Jeff Runquist and Dunham Cellars. These are some fantastic wines at great prices paired with a four coarse dinner option.
2011 JC Cellars ‘The First Date’ Roussanne-Marsanne blend, California
Honeysuckle, delicately sweet, gingery baking spice and peach. The palate is full-bodied with a slightly oily feeling that gives way to fine-grained texture that persists through the very long finish. There are flavors of stone fruit (peach and apricot), lemon chiffon, spice, toast and honey.
2010 Jeff Runquist ‘1448’ red blend, California
Big, deep, thick color one would expect from a wine that is largely Petite Sirah. The aromas are concentrated ripe black fruits; currants and cassis. The bouquet is full of smoky, roasted, chocolaty oak. The flavors are big and rich, full of caramel, chocolate and mocha. But this wine also delivers a strong fruit component of ripe blackberries. Smooth and supple with deep color and intensity of flavors,
2010 JC Cellars ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ red blend, California
A blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Grenache, Mourvedre, Pinot Noir. Pureness of fruit is the main focus of this wine, but there is definitely a dark and brambly side that lends intrigue. With notes of wild raspberries and blackberries, a hint of sweet cream and dark cocoa powder, this wine is complex enough to confound while remaining approachable and easy to drink.
2010 JC Cellars ‘Landy’ Sweetwater Springs Vineyards Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, California
Big and burly, with ripe blueberry and licorice aromas, revealing a dense backbone of tannins and acidity supporting the concentrated boysenberry, mineral and white pepper flavors. 90pts WS.
2009 Dunham Cellars ‘Trutina’ red blend, Columbia Valley, Washington
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Supple, racy and multilayered, offering plum, currant, dark chocolate and mint flavors that come together smoothly and expressively on the long finish. 92 pts WS.
